Can you believe it has been 15 years since Brittany Spears and Justin Timberlake wore their iconic denim head-to-toe looks as a couple to the American Music Awards?! After reading an article that highlighted the anniversary of this pop culture wonder, I started to have serious 90s baby nostalgia. I was only 7 years old when this happened, but I remember the moment like it was yesterday. Just goes to show how powerful of a fashion statement denim on denim is. Inspired to try my own version of the ensemble, I decided to double up on my denim this week.
My New Year has brought many changes into my life. Aesthetically, I have been channeling all different moods and styles. I dyed my hair back to its natural color, dark brown, and started to dress more casual chic, emphasizing comfort and practicality. Usually, I try to dress up my outfits and for some reason, I am now doing the opposite. Explains why I paired my frayed vest, cotton sweatshirt, patchwork jeans, and classic Adidas superstars for a chilly day. Although not comparable to Brittany and Justin’s matching outfits, I felt like I was taking a risk putting these items together.
Denim on denim is not something that is easy to pull off because you have to avoid looking like you stepped out of a Rodeo. What helped me put this outfit together the most was finding a balance. I wanted the shades of denim to go together, but not to match perfectly. I figured if I incorporated my patchwork jeans (which by the way are on sale) into the ensemble, this would create contrast with what was otherwise a monochromatic outfit. Once I achieved this balance, I found it to be an effortless look. This recycled trend is supposed to suggest a laid-back vibe, perfect for what I have been yearning to wear.
