It is always fascinating to me how history repeats itself, especially in fashion. How can something look so current fifty years ago and today? This past week I visited an exhibit curated by the Museum at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) called Yves Saint Laurent + Halston: Fashioning in the ‘70s. It was this great collection of vintage pieces that showed parallels between the designers work from fashion’s most pivotal times. One of my favorite looks was a striped pussy bow blouse from Saint Laurent’s 1974 Rive Gauche collection. I thought to myself, ‘wow this looks strikingly modern.’ Low and behold, I ordered a very similar blouse the next day off of Nasty Gal.

The pussy bow blouse is an iconic boho silhouette. This season it was spearheaded on the Gucci runway, and now most of the styles you see in stores are either sheer or lace. What distinguishes a pussybow blouse from a regular blouse is that there is a knotted tie around the neck. The style was once a part of Margaret Thatcher’s, Britain’s first female prime minister,  signature uniform. A time in history where a new wave of bohemia slowly eroded the old ways of conformity. The blouse is ethereal, youthful, and sometimes quirky, always bringing lightness and ease to an outfit. Basically, if you were in a free-spirited mood, you would wear a pussy bow blouse.

Paired with my top is a vinyl skirt I purchased from Topshop. The skirt was actually featured in of one of my favorite campaigns this year with Gigi Hadid. Vinyl is often associated with goth because of the dark fashion runway themes, but I imagined the skirt to have a more bohemian vibe. I seem to be turning all of my outfits into boho-chic lately, damn you ‘70s. Anyway, both of these trends can be pulled off in many different ways and styles. If you are feeling creative, you can also turn any blouse into a pussy bow blouse, by tying a skinny scarf in the same effect. I did something similar here. Fashion is constantly transporting us through time and I can’t wait to see what is next.
