Is “no white after Labor Day” still a thing?

Happy Labor Day! This weekend marks the end of a Summer that started with everyone flocking to beaches on Memorial Day, the time of year when people’s desire for warmer weather is fulfilled. Growing up in Florida I never quite appreciated what this season had to offer until I went away to college in the Northeast. My biggest adjustment thus far has been learning how to dress for the transition of seasons. Although frustrating at first, I now appreciate every opportunity to wear my summer resort clothes.

Tradition holds that after this weekend wearing white becomes a fashion faux pas. Back in the 1950s and 1960s, no white after labor day became a rule of a larger movement to educate the nouveau riche in dressing. The older families in society were thoroughly concerned about their fashion etiquette and these rules were meant to guide them. The white trend was predominantly popular in New York, becoming the light color of choice for Hamptons lawn parties and yachting. America’s vacation bound elite loved that white clothing was cool, convenient, and light-weight.

When Designers are constantly showing how white can be tastefully worn in fall/winter, it is clear that fashion is over the “no white after labor day” rule. The point is to wear what is weather appropriate while never being limited by certain colors. Your creativity and expression of color should never be suppressed because of the “status quo.” As if the colder months weren’t already difficult to get dressed for, I say make it easier on yourself and wear whatever color you want. My plan this season is to invest in some winter whites, a favorite alternative to a summer white. So until next time sheer white pants and halterneck bathing suit, you will be missed…
