The last time that I found myself wearing a mundane gray sweatshirt was back in High School. I would have to wake up at 6 AM to get ready and you couldn’t pay me to put any more thought into my outfit besides finding something comfortable. Of course, there were those occasions when I would develop a crush on someone and then start caring more about my appearance. It is not that I didn’t have an interest in fashion, I just didn’t care to exercise it before sunrise. Now it’s a whole different story and I put lots of time and care into what I wear. So here I am in a very similar sweatshirt that I would have worn back then, except this time styled to be a fashion statement, not my slacker uniform.
Sweatshirts are everywhere this season! From Rihanna caught rocking a Vetements one to all the neutral pullovers in Yeezy Season 2, everyone seems to include this comfortable layer into their wardrobe. W Magazine has even predicted the sweatshirt to be one of 2016’s biggest fashion trends. The familiar slouchy silhouette is being incorporated beyond off-duty looks and people are actually wearing them to work or dressing them up for a night out. The best part is nothing has changed and its still the same old cozy loungewear piece.
I bought my pullover from Forever 21 because the distressed look caught my eye. There is something about the concept of purposely buying ripped clothes that I can’t get enough of. To contrast the worn out details, I styled it with some tailored pants. It has really proven to be one of the most valid additions to my wardrobe this season. The sweatshirt has evolved past a trend and risen to become a style staple worn beyond a lazy Sunday afternoon. I don’t think you can go wrong investing in one and I have included some cool options below.
