Contrary to last week, I am excited to talk to you about a less elaborate decade in fashion, the 90s. I was born in 1993, and when most of the trends you read about happened before your time, it’s nice to be able to reminisce. I feel this sense of credibility when writing about the 90s, as if I wasn’t in diapers for most of it. Nevertheless the 90s are back and better than ever. Probably the most convincing example that this decade has returned is the resurgence of the slip dress.
After the 80s, fashion took a minimalistic turn and the slip dress became a staple. Slip dresses were worn beyond the boudoir, doubling as a cocktail dress in the evening and slinky pajamas at night. A feminine silhouette that has become the go-to item for Spring first made an appearance on Riccardo Tisci’s runway for Givenchy. Tisci always knows how to create items that spark an instant desire, and the dreamy slip dresses did just that.
There is something so effortless about wearing a slip dress. I love how comfortable it makes me feel, yet sexy at the same time. What first drew me to the silhouette is its versatility. Let’s say you want to dress down the look: it layers great with knits and leather jackets. The next time I wear this dress I am going to throw on a white turtleneck and chucks. That is what growing up in the 90s was about anyway, dressing with sheer simplicity.
